According to the National Fire Protection Association, a home structure fire was reported every 66 seconds in 2016. Is your home currently prepared for a fire emergency? Honor National Fire Prevention Month and discover how to protect you and your family with the following tips.

Install Smoke Detectors

A fatal fire can occur at any time, and unfortunately, most fires break out while the household is fast asleep. About two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or with improperly installed smoke alarms. Ensure that your home is equipped with effective smoke alarms, and test the alarms every month.

Purchase a Fire Extinguisher

In 2016, the NFPA reported 2,950 civilian fire deaths related to structure fires. You may not have thought to purchase a fire extinguisher before, but the tool could become necessary for your survival. Put out a small flame before it develops into a fire emergency.

Once you purchase a fire extinguisher, you may be eligible to receive a discount from your insurance company.

Establish a Fire Escape Plan

Just as fire drills are a crucial aspect of school safety, you should establish a fire escape plan for your family. Practice this plan twice a year, so that your spouse and children will be prepared during the event of a fire emergency. Start by identifying two escape routes out of each room, and ensure that each route can be used safely by everyone.

Get out, Stay Out

In the event of a fire emergency, get out, stay out, and call for help. Once all members of your family have exited your home, do not go back into your home for any reason. Call your local fire department and stand far away from the scene.
