A Look For Every Home & Budget

How to Find the Right Color Temperature for Each Room

What is your desired color temperature?

Color temperature is a way to describe the light appearance provided by a light bulb. Every light bulb has a color temperature that is measured in KELVINS (K). The lower numbers below 5,000K are warmer colors and the higher numbers are cooler colors.  Anywhere between 5500K to 6500K depicts the natural color temperature of light.  The color temperature that you choose can have a large effect on the overall color of the room. It can change the color of wall paint, furniture, and even carpets.

Warm Colors

Understanding kelvin temperature (K) makes it easier to choose lighting that gives you the look and feel that you want. For a warm, almost orange glow, warm white is the best color temperature for you. Your bulb will run between 2000-3000K, creating a cozy, calm, inviting space. This color temperature is best for living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. It can also be used to create ambient lighting.

Vibrant Colors

If you desire a brighter, more vibrant look to your room, 3100K-4500K bulbs are best. These create a cool white tone and are best for basements, garages, work environments, and task lighting.

Natural Light

A 4600K-6500K bulb is best if you’re attempting to mimic natural daylight. This form of light is crisp and invigorating and is best for security lighting, display areas, task lighting, and garages.

Use Light to Your Advantage

The light source you choose affects how colors appear in a room, but so does the way you use the light. If the color of light produced by a bulb isn’t quite to your liking, you can tweak it by picking a fixture shade that changes the light. Use the natural light that enters the room to your advantage! Control and monitor this natural light with different shades, curtains, and blinds.
